islamORADa

Islamorada The Florida KeysSouthwest of Key Largo on Upper Matecumbe Key, Islamorada is the self-proclaimed "Sportfishing Capital of the World." People who visit take their fishing seriously, and there are many ways to catch a "big 'un." Islamorada's charter boat captains can take you on the fishing trip of your life. But venturing out on your own in a rented boat, wading in the shallows or bridge fishing are also great ways to explore area waters.  The Keys' famed coral reef, which extends miles into the ocean, is both the feeding and breeding grounds for hundreds of varieties of fish.

One of the largest towns in the Keys, Islamorada offers a number of attractions. You can explore the wreckage of the Dutch-built ship San Pedro or the Underwater Coral Gardens of both Upper and Lower Matecumbe Keys. Indian Key, offshore on the Atlantic side of Lower Matecumbe Key is a designated State Historic Site. South of Lower Matecumbe Key, Long Key State Park has one of the loveliest beaches in the Keys.

Key Largo The Florida KeysDriving south Key Largo is the first of the Florida Keys.  Long known for the clarity of its waters, Key Largo's star attraction is the John Pennekamp State Park, the first underwater preserve in the nation. Home to more than 600 species of Technicolor tropical fish and 40 brilliant types of coral, the park is a part of the nationally protected Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary. In addition to diving and snorkeling, the park offers guided walks, canoe trips, a glass-bottomed boat tour, picnicking, camping, fishing and boating.

Adjacent to John Pennekamp State Park is the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary, this underwater sanctuary encompasses more than 178 nautical square miles of reefs, sea grass beds and mangrove swamps. To the south, the quiet town of Tavernier lies along the Overseas Highway, known as such because there was always a tavern near. Now visitors can stop by this charming hamlet and tour a restored turn-of-the-century home, church and postal office. key west

Key West Florida Keys150 miles south of Miami, Key West is truly the end of the line, the southernmost point of the United States. Key West's charm has remained, though the pace of life has picked up quite a bit. Key West has become a place where people escape from the rat race to join the race for the freest, the "funnest" and the most flamboyant.

If you prefer a more solitary vacation, you can spend your days dozing in a hammock between two palms, and your nights listening to the gentle hum of insects and the far-away beat of a reggae band. Or, if you're like most visitors, you'll take it easy during the day, enjoying the beach or Key West's shops and attractions, and spend your nights partying in its bars and nightclubs, most of which are clustered along the main strip of Duval Street.

Whatever your choice, you'll find Key West is an island that never stops. Sunset in Key West is more than a time of day; it's a happening — a special time when hundreds of people gather on the docks at Mallory Square along with musicians, entertainers and vendors. Key West embraces a fascinating mix of history, eccentricity and lush island charm. Civil War era forts, famous writer's homes, sidewalk cafés, and outrageous folks all add to the atmosphere of life on island time.

marathon, key vaca

Marathon in The Florida KeysLocated as it is very nearly at the mid-point of the Keys, Marathon justly deserves its appellation of "Heart of the Keys", and a busy heart it is. What began as a tiny fishing village in the early 1800s has become a bustling metropolis replete with shopping malls, a country club and restaurants ranging from elegant to express. Marathon, which sits on Key Vaca island, boasts fishing tournaments throughout the year.

Party boats take groups out to the wrecks and reefs on trips lasting a few hours or several days. In spring and early summer, charter boats carry anglers out to the Gulf Stream to catch the mighty marlin. The island also boasts a nine-hole golf course and numerous sport resorts. The breathtaking drive over the Seven Mile Bridge begins at Marathon, a vantage point unsurpassed for taking in the sheer sweep of the Straits of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico.

Attractions include the famous Seven Mile Bridge (the old bridge is now the world's longest fishing pier), Sombrero Public Beach with it's own little picnic island, West Sister Rock, Dolphin Research Center, Pigeon Key Historic Railroad site, Turtle Hospital, and museums of Crane Point Hammock (Florida Keys Museum of Natural History, Children's Museum and 5 mile Nature Trail through an endangered tropical hammock forest).
